Reil was a madman he did a lot of things to show that he is a madman and here is why i thinks hes one
Riel new he must get someone to run the red river so he got McDougall. He did all of Reil biding and hard work. He left Canada. When he had left Canada he left all his people to fend for them selfs cues was exiled in the USA after a bounty was put on his head for Scott’s execution. When he was in the U.S he stayed with his uncle. Not to long after he started to loss his mind. Once he had tried to jump out a window. He was trying to kill himself and failed. Then his uncle toke his to a place for people who have gone mad. It toke them a few years before they were willing to let reil free.
Once he was free reil came back to Canada. Once back in canada Riel took the radical step of calling a meeting in a local church where he called for a vote on setting up a provisional government, which Riel called "the Exovedate" and taking up arms against the Canadian government. At the same time, Riel announced his intention to establish a new church under a new pope, Bishop Bourget of Montreal. He assured followers that God will help the members of his flock as his new chosen people, and engaged in a ritual in which he breathed the "Holy Spirit" into each person declaring support for his cause. He toke all his people to war with the climactic battle between the badly-outnumbered rebels and Middleton's troops began on May 9 near Batoche. As a gunboat carrying troops steamed up the Saskatchewan River, other troops marched over land to the rebel-held town. Knowing the rebels were pinned down and low on ammunition, Middleton was content to led the fighting drag on for several days All tho reil him self did not fight. He stood on his own horse Praying for his own peoples lifes. Not once did reil fight in the war, or did he move from his one spot in the middle of everything.
After all the fighting and wars were done reil was put on trail. Well he was at his trail he was told that if he admitted to being a madman they would let him go and it he had payed the court 3000$. He refused to admit to it even tho there was proof he was one. Not admitting to being a madman reil was though of as guilty. He toke full responsibility for what hes done. The execution of Louis Riel elevated him to the status of martyr in much of Quebec. Mass rallies were held in Montreal, and people throughout the province hung black drapes and displayed other signs of mourning. Many historians cite the Riel execution as a turning point in Canadian politics that would break the Conservative hold on French Canada.
This is why i think riel was a madman and how he showed it.
